How to Clean Watercolor Brushes Without Damaging Them
Gentle cleaning and correct drying protect the point, ferrule and handle.
After painting
- Rinse watercolor or gouache from the brush with clean water until it runs clear.
- Gently reshape the point or edge with your fingers.
- Lay the brush flat to dry rather than leaving it standing in water.
- Store only after it is dry and protect delicate points from being crushed.
Merchant guidance: Silver Brush advises cleaning after each session, not soaking brushes in water, and laying brushes flat to dry so moisture does not travel into the ferrule.
For other paint media, follow the paint and brush maker's cleaning guidance because acrylic and oil require different handling.
